Brian Chen is an American-Chinese/Taiwanese filmmaker and photographer who was born and raised in Orange County, California.
With extensive experience in analog 16mm to 8mm motion picture, he believes in the beauty and emotional resonance that traditional mediums can bring out in people. In his photography, Chen also works closely with 35mm and medium format analog cameras, forever searching for all the creative beauty the world can offer.
Chen’s mastery of digital and analog film as an art form is evident in his work, which showcases stunning visuals and emotional depth. His senior thesis film, Agong, exemplifies this dedication. The short documentary has been recognized internationally, winning Best Documentary Short at Cannes Arts Fest, Best Student Film at August LA Sun Film Fest, Best Student Short at the Hong Kong Indie Film Festival, and Best Documentary at Top Shorts, among other honors. It has also screened at festivals such as the Los Angeles Lift-Off Film Festival, Asian Film Festival Los Angeles, and New York International Film Awards, affirming Chen’s ability to create works that resonate across cultures.
His broader dedication and passion for the craft have earned him recognition at additional festivals, including the WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival and the Hollywood International Film Academy. He has collaborated with notable figures in the industry, such as Benjamin Chen (no relation) on Mozart and his 260 Pianists, which won a Gold Remy, and John Feist, known for his Royal Tour documentary series, which won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Nonfiction Program.
Chen’s education includes attendance at four different film-related institutions, including USC, SOCAPA, San Francisco Art Institute, and a Film BFA degree from Pratt Institute in New York. With a unique perspective and artistic vision, Chen continues to inspire and captivate audiences around the world.
